August 19, 2013 – Novi, Michigan — It's been almost fifteen years since the Asian Brown Marmorated Stink Bug was discovered in Pennsylvania. Ever since then, it has rapidly been spreading across the country and has now manged to find its way to at least forty states. The most recent states this menace has spread to have been North Carolina and Iowa.

Because this stink bug is from Asia, there have not yet been any natural predators and therefore the population keeps growing and become more and more uncontrollable. Scientists have even resorted to traveling to Asia in attempt to find the stink bugs natural predator. There has not been much progress with this except for the possibility of the parasitic wasp being a possible predator.

Peach, apple, corn, and soybean crops seem to be their main target, attacking during the fruiting stage of a plant. Last year in the mid-Atlantic states alone, $52 million dollars worth of damage to peach and apple plants was discovered. Although it seems like there is little hope with controlling this insect anytime soon, there are ways to tame down the infestation and attempt to keep them from spreading any worse than they already have. Todd Snively, President of Optimal Pest Control, stated during a recent interview, “The stinkbug season is upon us and numerous homeowners are searching for the ultimate weapon against the current stinkbug invasion. If they want to try to tackle the stinkbug on their own we tell them to get a pint of Talstar and spray around their windows, doors, crops or any area that they see stinkbugs present. This is the least expensive and most effective way to combat the stinkbug.” It can be extremely expensive to hire an exterminator to do the job for you when it is just as simple to do the job yourself.

In addition to the food crops, homeowners have found hundreds, if not thousands of these pesky stink bugs on the sides of their houses without hope of them leaving any time soon. Windows, doors, and any possible cracks or holes are all places where these sneaky bugs can sneak in and take over your home. Snively continued on saying, “Talstar is not only effective when used on crops but is also safe to use on homes and in residential areas.” Although the ultimate goal is to eventually have a natural predator to control this Asian invader, right now this is the most effective option that we have to keep these out of our homes and to help protect our crops in order to hopefully avoid millions more lost by this nasty insect.
